The short film “Memoria bajo el agua” (Memory Underwater), in which I appear as the lead actress and co-screenwriter, is not just a work of fiction; it is a profound emotional journey that invites reflection on the sense of rootlessness and the collective memory of those communities that have been submerged by the waters of the reservoirs. This film project originated from a short film workshop at the Lo Carreró cultural center in Montgai, with the aim of bringing to life a narrative that touches on the essence of what it means to belong to a place.

A Profound and Resonant Story

The story revolves around a woman who, weighed down by her memories, visits her town’s reservoir every day, seeking a connection to her past. Her ritual of immersing herself in the water symbolizes her attempt to recover what she has lost, but it also reflects the pain of being uprooted and the internal struggle between the desire to forget and the need to remember. When her grandfather invites her to share a meal in memory of her mother, she faces a profound dilemma: to participate in community life or to remain immersed in her solitude.

This short film not only tells a personal story; it also addresses universal themes of identity, loss, and resilience. It serves as a mirror reflecting the experiences of many families who, forced by decisions made by others, were displaced and watched as their homes became symbols of oblivion.

A Call for Solidarity

To bring this significant project to life, its director, Alfonso Gazitúa Gaete, along with Miquel Badia Vendrell, Ricard Guiu Peiró, Jordi Herbera Dolcet, and I, are issuing an urgent call to the artistic community and film lovers: we need your support as patrons. The production, which aims to tell stories that are often overlooked, is currently running a crowdfunding campaign on Verkami. Every contribution is crucial to ensuring that these voices are heard and that the memory of these communities is kept alive.

By supporting this project, you are not only investing in the production of a short film, but you are also taking part in an act of cultural resistance. Art—especially film—has the power to spark dialogue and foster empathy. There is a magic in stories that are not only seen but also felt in the heart; “Memòria sota l’Aigua” seeks to create that connection.

The Importance of Collective Memory

As the plot unfolds, the short film explores how a community’s collective memory is an invaluable heritage that must be protected. Cultural resistance to uprooting and loss becomes a struggle for identity. When people forget their history, they lose the thread that connects them to their identity and culture.

We will film in the Noguera region, a place steeped in shared stories and memories. The team is committed to evoking those experiences in every scene, and our goal is for the audience not only to watch, but also to feel and hear the voices that have been silenced.

Become a Patron

We have chosen to raise funds through a crowdfunding campaign on Verkami.

By becoming a patron of “Memòria sota l’Aigua,” you’re not only supporting a short film, but also taking part in an artistic and social movement that seeks to recover what history has tried to erase. This project serves as a reminder that our stories are valuable, and that each of us has the power to help build a future where our memories are always preserved.
